ABP invests £1.5 million in mobile solution

Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s largest ports group, has launched a programme to digitalise asset management across its network of 21 ports.

By investing £1.5 million ($1.8 million) in a mobile solution of this scale, ABP continues its efforts to drive digitalisation in the UK ports sector.

This expanded implementation, in conjunction with Mainsaver and Spidex, follows a successful pilot trial of the new technology at several ABP ports.

The trial ensured that both large and small ports were considered to fully test the practicalities of implementing and allocating work in a digital manner.

Mainsaver Connect is a mobile version of the Mainsaver Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), a US product backed by Spidex, a UK-based developer.

Mike McCartain, ABP’s Group Director of Safety, Engineering and Marine, commented: “Going digital with our asset management is an important step in building the sustainable Ports of the Future, where information is shared accurately and instantaneously”.

The mobile device rollout will include the deployment of hundreds of tablets and focused training sessions for engineers across ABP’s regions.

The deployment will be carried out in tandem across ABP’s business areas of the Humber, Southampton, and Wales, and will be led by a senior ABP person in each region, according to the company’s recent statement.

Nicole Geraghty, ABP Port Planner (Maintenance), said: “I really look forward to working with this powerful new tool.”

Geragthy noted that it will enable access to ‘real time’ information, saving ABP’s technical teams time and eventually allowing them to make educated decisions based on accurate information.

“It is an exciting time at ABP as we see investments not only in digitalisation but also in upskilling our people and electrifying plant, cranes, vehicles as part of our ambition to make port operations more sustainable,” explained Geragthy.

This latest investment in digitalisation builds on ABP’s forward-thinking steps taken in 2021, when the Port of Southampton became the first British port to install a private 5G network.

Launched on 28 February, the strategy sets out a plan to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions from ABP’s own operations by 2040.

Getting Started Guide – Mainsaver Cloud Free Trial

Getting Started 1.1 – Logging In

Tip – Look for an email with the subject line: Login credentials – Mainsaver Cloud Trial with your password and unique login address for your instance. You will need that unique login address each time you use Mainsaver Cloud. You cannot bookmark it from the app itself. Instead, copy it from the login credentials email to your list of bookmarks.

Getting Started 1.2 – Changing Your Password

Tip: After logging in for the first time you should secure your user information by changing your password.

Getting Started 1.3 – Adding Users

Tip: You can have up to 5 users in your trial – so be sure to include any team members you want to help with your evaluation.

Getting Started 2.0 – The Dashboard

Tip: Your trial is preloaded with a small amount of sample data to make it easy to see how Mainsaver Cloud works. The Dashboard displays an overview of the sample data, as well as any data you add yourself.

Getting Started 3.0 – Queries

Tip: Mainsaver’s query tools give you complete visibility into assets and work order history, inventory management, cost trends, and more. This video will demonstrate how to use queries in the assets module, but the same procedures apply to every module with a main grid. Custom queries are easy to make, and can be shared and exported to make reports available to anyone.

Getting Started 4.1 – Creating Assets

Tip: Assets represent physical resources owned by the company, such as buildings, vehicles, or equipment. You can create a new asset either from scratch or as a duplicate of an existing asset. When it comes to maintenance, a picture is worth one thousand words, so upload a photograph of the asset to display in the detail tab.

Getting Started 4.2 – Creating Work Orders and Work Requests

Tip: There are several ways to create new work requests, but one of the fastest is to start with the asset that needs maintenance. Simply select the asset, enter a title, the description and the priority for your request and save. The process for work orders is just as easy. After you’ve saved a work order, you can navigate through additional tabs to further plan the work order, add additional information and upload documents.

Getting Started 4.3 – Approving Work Requests

Tip: Work requests require approval to become work orders. Mainsaver makes it easy to notify the person making the request by email when you give your approval. You can also make any necessary modifications to the work order as part of this step.

Getting Started 4.4 - Completing and Closing Work Orders

Tip: Open work orders can have time, materials, and services charged to them, parts issued to them from the parts master module, and job plans filled out. After fulfillment of the necessary work, you should close a work order to prevent further actions from taking place. You can complete and close work orders while editing them, or you can select multiple work orders to complete and close at once.

Getting Started 5.1 – Creating Preventive Maintenance Master Records

Tip: PM master records serve as templates used for planning, scheduling, and tracking preventive maintenance work orders. Start by selecting the asset and the frequency of PM. Add a description and some other basic information, then save. After saving, you can freely navigate between the tabs to plan necessary tasks, services, and materials. For example, you can use the labor tab to plan craft times.

Getting Started 5.2 – Generating Preventive Maintenance Work Orders

Tip: Once created, PM master records can generate recurring preventive maintenance work orders. You can select individual PMs from which to generate work orders, or choose to process all the PMs and generate every PM work order that is due with one click.

Getting Started 6.1 – Creating Purchase Orders

Tip: Purchase orders provide a way to plan for incoming maintenance materials and services before receiving them. They can be generated from requisitions and quotes, but you can also create them directly in the purchase orders module. If you are re-ordering parts, you can quickly add them to a purchase order by selecting a stock number. All the relevant data from the selected part will automatically carry over to the line item in your PO.

Getting Started 6.2 – Receiving Purchase Orders

Tip: Mainsaver helps you keep track of your inventories as spare parts are received and used. You can receive materials and services either from existing purchase orders or directly from the material-services receiving page without needing to create an order first.

Q: What is Mainsaver Cloud?
A: Mainsaver Cloud is the new, web-based SaaS version of Mainsaver’s proven CMMS platform. It’s easy to use and implement, accessible anywhere, and affordable for small and medium-sized businesses. Learn more about the capabilities of Mainsaver Cloud here and see a complete feature list here.

Q: What are the technical requirements for Mainsaver Cloud?
A: Mainsaver Cloud is hosted in the cloud, so you don’t need to set up or manage any servers. All you need is access to a browser, such as Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. It works on any device, but you’ll get the best visual experience on tablets and computers.

Q: Does my free trial include all the features of Mainsaver Cloud?
A: Yes, it does. You’ll be able to use the full Mainsaver Cloud feature set in this trial.

Q. When can I access my free trial?
A. To safeguard the integrity of our database and ensure a good trial experience, we review every trial request prior to provisioning. If you’re based in the US or Canada and supplied a valid company name and business email address, we’ll set up your trial account during US business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM Pacific. This process usually takes less than 30 minutes. You’ll receive an email from mainsavercloud@mainsaver.com with information on how to log in once your account is fully provisioned. You will then have 14 days to try out Mainsaver Cloud.

Q. Where do I log in to Mainsaver Cloud?
A. To protect the security of your data, each instance of Mainsaver Cloud has its own login URL, which looks like: secure.mainsaver.com/xxxxx. This will be set up for you along with your login credentials. Look for a “Login Credentials” email from mainsavercloud@mainsaver.com. This will contain your login URL, user ID, and initial password. Save that email for future reference, and bookmark your custom URL as it appears in the email for easy access in the future. Note that once you log in, you will be redirected, and that, for security reasons, bookmarks made within the application will not allow access once you are logged out. You will need your original URL to log back in. If you’ve lost your login credentials email and don’t know the URL you need, contact Mainsaver support at (800) 908-4616 and we’ll be glad to help.

Q. Can I invite other users at my company to join my Mainsaver Cloud trial?
A. Yes, you can have up to 5 users during your trial. Once you’re logged in to Mainsaver Cloud, use the Sys Admin module to add them to your trial instance.

Q. How do I join a trial that someone else at my company set up?
A. Simply ask them to add you to the trial using the Sys Admin console. You will then receive the information you need to login to your shared trial.

Q. Can I get a demonstration or training to help with my trial?

Q. Can I import my data into Mainsaver Cloud during my free trial?
A. Not today, but that capability is coming soon!

Q. What happens to the data I enter during my free trial?
A. When you purchase Mainsaver Cloud you will be given a new, clean production instance that does not contain our preloaded demo data nor any data that you entered during your free trial. We’ve found that most users experiment during their trial, and prefer to start their production use without this data. You will have the same login URL and can set up your system exactly as you wish to implement it in production. We will include a small amount of seed data to expedite your implementation.

If you prefer to retain all the information and users from your trial, you can note that when you purchase your subscription, and we will convert your trial to your production site with all the data intact. In this case, your production instance will also include the demo data preloaded into the trial site. Talk to our support team first if you think you will want to do this.

If you don’t purchase Mainsaver within six months from the start of your trial, then we’ll erase your instance and your data.

Q. How do I purchase Mainsaver Cloud?
A. You can buy a yearly subscription to Mainsaver Cloud on our website. Pricing is based on the number of users.
